Naperville City Council Closer to Prohibiting Homeless Man’s Protest
No “Extended Camping” on Chicago Avenue?
City council members voted 7-1 to draft an ordinance prohibit what they’re calling “extended camping” on Chicago Avenue.
Naperville News 17 crews talked to residents about the plan to evict Scott Huber.
“I think there’s a possibility that he should go,” said Joan Mravca.
“Just on a more humane level, I think we could find some alternative solution,” said Lynn Dowd.
“I think it needs to be done,” said Jean Moran. “I don’t think it’s a very good image for Naperville.”
“We’ve been here a long time and I’m so used to seeing him there that he doesn’t really seem to bother anyone,” said Laureen Ayer. “So I kind of feel bad about that.
Huber has set up what he calls a permanent protest site on the public sidewalk along Chicago Avenue. He’s been there almost eight years.
“They’re making this a homeless issue, and this is a protest issue,” Huber said. “As a business man, I decide to eliminate liabilities, such as residential assets. It shouldn’t prohibit my right to protest here on a 24/7 basis, if that’s what I want to focus on.”
Councilman Robert Fieseler was the only member to vote against the measure.
“I don’t care how we dress this up, we have documents we’ve received that say this is tailored to Mr. Huber,” Fieseler said. “We’re not going to get away with this. You can say it’s for the greater good but it’s not.”
“I think there’s a safety issue here that needs to be addressed,” said Councilman Douglas Krause.
City manager Doug Krieger says City Council is still a few meetings away from passing a law that would essentially evict Huber.
